REVIEW SUMMARY
A sprawling biopic made with love, The Glorias serves as an enjoyable nod to a historical hero. However, it would seem our director/writer, Julie Taymor, bit off slightly more than she could chew here. You see, the way this film plays out, with multiple time periods covered (hence the multiple versions of Gloria), we only get the “cliff notes” of events, making it essentially a Gloria Steinem highlight reel. Perhaps it’s because there are just too many incredible moments in Gloria’s life to focus on just one? Regardless, trying to cover ALL of it (even in a 2 and ½ hour movie) took a lot of the depth out of the proceedings. Luckily, our director has a flair for imagery and visual metaphors, letting the film’s stylization fill in some of the gaps with highly imaginative bits. It’s also worth mentioning that all our "Glorias" are wonderfully brought to life by a talented group of actresses. In particular, Alicia Vikander and Julianne Moore’s portrayals are clearly coming from a place of love and admiration. So yes, while The Glorias is pretty great, it’s unfortunately a few notches away from glorious.
