REVIEW SUMMARY

Gloriously dumb and legitimately laugh-out-loud funny - Liam Neeson’s deadpan commitment seals the deal in Akiva Schaffer’s The Naked Gun. For fans of the original Leslie Nielsen-led franchise, just know that the formula remains the same: a relentless barrage of gags, goofs, and absurd set pieces. And, well, this latest installment may just have outdone itself. Ok, sure, not every joke lands, but the hit rate is actually impressively high. From clever physical comedy to non-stop pop culture jabs, to say the film is packed with punchlines would be an understatement. Heck, tt likely requires multiple viewing to get all of them. But, it’s Neeson who makes it all sing. Playing it completely straight, the dramatic heavyweight becomes an not-so accidental comedy icon by never once trying to be funny. Plus, his pairing with Pamela Anderson turns out to be inspired – with Anderson also leaning all the way into the innuendo-laced, juvenile humor with pitch-perfect timing. Visually, this reboot also ups the ante. While the earlier films had a flat, procedural-TV vibe, this one gets a slick, cinematic upgrade that adds just the right amount of polish to pair with the onscreen shenanigans. Will the story win any awards? Not likely. But is it hilarious? Without question. And in an era starved for big-screen comedy, The Naked Gun is a refreshing offering that delivers the funny —and that’s the naked truth.
