REVIEW SUMMARY
Ryan Murphy’s adaptation of the Broadway musical The Prom isn’t an absolute showstopper, but rather a sufficient toe tapper. That is to say, you’ll be thoroughly entertained, but never once blown away. What works best here is the music. The songs are big, catchy and full of bombastic energy (seriously, there’s not a dud in the bunch). What doesn’t work as well, however, are the in-between parts. Sure, the A-list actors are having fun fully embracing their character’s extravagant quirks, but there’s a real lack of “heart” at the centre of everything. It’s all “dress up” and “show,” but little in the way of genuine sentiment. And while the story has good intentions, it admittedly “preaches to the choir” a little too much. And, well, did this really need to be over 2 hours long? The answer is no – it most certainly did not. So yes, The Prom is for sure a glittery fun experience – if only it wasn’t an empty one.
