REVIEW SUMMARY
A throwback to well-made direct-to-video bloody actioners, Steven C. Miller’s Werewolves is plain and simply dumb fun. In other words, the film's lack of depth is offset by its brainless action-packed entertainment. Let’s just say the story is very typical and not ground-breaking in the least. Think of it as The Purge – but, you know, with werewolves. However, the simplicity of the concept is not a bad thing. Plus, the slightly rough around the edges production only enhances its b-level charm, adding greatly to its overall appeal. Adding to that visual enjoyment are the welcome practical effects used for the titular werewolves. There’s a real tangible rawness when it comes to these creatures – something that would surely be lost if it were done via CGI. The other strong point to the film is star Frank Grillo. What can I say, the seasoned macho actor makes for a perfect action hero. He knows how to be a badass and look cool doing it. Plus, he’s easy to root for. The others in the cast? Not so much. Not necessarily the actors fault though, as the movie doesn’t really lend itself to giving meaningful character depth. But, at an easily digestible 1 hour and 30 minutes, Werewolves and it’s cast of survivors, victims, and gnarly beings go down extra smooth!
