REVIEW SUMMARY
For a film based on a viral Twitter rant, Janicza Bravo’s Zola is one sassy and salacious trip. And boy oh boy is it a trip worth taking! Entertaining to the max, the movie is not only a cautionary tale around the world of backdoor sex work, but a darkly hilarious social satire. Ok, so maybe they play it a little too light when it comes to some of the more serious themes, but it still manages to pack an emotional punch on more than one occasion. The humour has no issues hitting its mark though, ranging from raunchy to downright shocking. Yep, the social media inspired plot is as outrageous as you expect (and want) it to be. Think Hustlers meets Spring Breakers! The actors involved are also clearly game for the debaucherously wild ride. Taylor Paige anchors things with a sultry steady hand, but Riley Keough deserves so much credit for being the epitome of a “love to hate” movie character. Bravo’s directing also merits a tip of the hat, keeping things interesting with some fun Twitter-infused stylization, not to mention an agreeable zippy pace to the proceedings. Does it lose some steam by the end? Sure – but what stripper road trip turned life-or-death conundrum doesn’t? So, if any movie deserves a good ‘ol fashioned retweet, it’s certainly this one!
