5. DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE
Mega-meta and cameo-stuffed fan service reign supreme in Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine. Yep, all the Easter Eggs, insider jokes, fourth-wall breaks, and guest appearances are guaranteed to put smiles on the fan boys and fan girls. Plus, the movie’s nostalgia for superhero flicks of yesteryear is through the roof. Doubling as a love letter to the “Fox era” cast of super characters, there's more going on than meets the eye. Too much? Maybe. But, with Deadpool, excess is kinda the name of the game.
4. STRANGE DARLING
Gloriously unpredictable and brilliantly bonkers, Strange Darling is likely to be the most memorable viewing experience you’ll have all year! It’s wildly fun stuff, and it’s made even more captivating thanks to the impeccable performances from Kyle Gallner and Willa Fitzgerald – the latter really going for broke with her ambitious output. The movie also sports an electric vibe, breakneck pace and biting dialogue. Plus, with themes about the dynamics and politics around gender, Strange Darling makes for one heck of a compelling watch.
3. THE SUBSTANCE
A body horror masterpiece with a mass helping of biting commentary, Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance will be the biggest bat sh*t crazy movie you’ll see all year - and that's a good thing! At 2 hours and 20 minutes, the film ramps up the delightful insanity with each passing scene, culminating in a grotesquely gruesome “final bow.” And if you think the high concept premise seems over-the-top to the max, you’re not wrong. Thankfully, it’s played as such, with the filmmakers embracing the camp and delivering jaw dropping transformations that deserve your eyeballs.
2. DUNE: PART TWO
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is an explosive and expansive epic in every way! Our skillful director has once again taken Frank Herbert’s ambitiously dense tale and adapted it into an awe-inspiring viewing experience for the ages. With all the heavy lifting done in the first outing, this follow-up film feels more straightforward in its narrative structure, allowing for an effortlessly enjoyable unravelling of action, wonder, and drama – not to mention romance. Dune: Part Two makes for the perfect sequel to an already existing masterpiece. Dare I say, it’s even spicier…I mean better!
