REVIEW SUMMARY
All hail the Horror Gods, as they have delivered yet another superb offering for us bloodthirsty moviegoers! Yep, Barbarian is an unexpected, darkly funny, and downright terrifying thrill-ride from start to finish! Forget what you think you know based on the adverts, because this is one movie that takes as many narrative sharp turns as it does risks. And, lucky for us, they all pay off. Without going into spoiler territory, just know that the movie expertly builds up dread, only to divert into the unpredictable. Do they stick the landing? Admittedly, the third act is the weakest, but that’s not to say it isn’t satisfying – it just gets a bit bumpy is all. The script is smart, fresh, and timely (who knew this was also a #MeToo film?). Performances are also great, with believable turns from Bill Skarsgard and Georgina Campbell. Justin Long, on the other hand, is a force of a different nature. Here, Long brings about plenty of laugh-out-loud moments with his misguided machismo. Having also wrote the film, our director Zach Cregger has instantly put himself into “must watch” status with this one. Always one step ahead of the audience, Creggor is clearly a horror connoisseur, serving up a mix of genre tropes, but with a healthy coat of fresh paint. So, on behalf of all horror fans, I say, paint away Mr. Creggor, paint away!
