Allan Ungar’s Bandit is a solid Canadian Catch Me if You Can caper. The movie’s true-to-life tale is an effortlessly entertaining one, thanks greatly to the charms of Josh Duhamel and supporting stars Mel Gibson, Elisha Cuthbert and Nestor Carbonell. But, the movie suffers from a tad indulgent running time and some frequent disjointedness. It’s also a familiar tale. You know, the smart crook in a cat and mouse game with the authorities. Don’t get me wrong, it’s done well, and is fun to watch, but it is an admittedly predictable outing. Luckily, there’s a nice blend of genuine action and thrills with the character drama. Ungar does a great job of keeping things moving and our eyes of the screen and not our watches. And hey, the movie scratches a few genre itches, adding in plenty of lightheartedness and high stakes heist suspense. So while it might not standout as boldly amongst other fascinating criminal biopics, it certainly soars more than it sputters!
