Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s I.S.S delivers so-so outer space suspense, but unfortunately little else. Don’t get me wrong, the movie has its moments (the premise alone is a captivating one). And while the claustrophobic setting adds greatly to the ensuing dread, the story sadly devolves down a formulaic path rather quickly. It’s all very watchable and fundamentally solid, mind you, but it’s just too basic to become anything memorable. Luckily, the cast at hand is up for the mission. Led by a very likable Ariana DeBoise, all the actors hit their requisite emotional marks. Could they have used more character development? Undoubtably – but there’s more than enough there to make us care about their ultimate fates. There’s also an interesting message being served up here, namely that we humans truly are our worst enemies. There are also moral questions aplenty around what one should, could and would do for their country. But, with such a bland execution, it lacks the required (ahem) gravity!
