The Super Mario Galaxy Movie delivers a super dose of fan service in a hyperactive romp that keeps things fun—but never profound. Yep, much like the first installment, it isn’t exactly pixel-perfect, but it leans hard into being delightfully entertaining - serving up more of that candy-coated nostalgia. There’s fan service… and then there’s this level of fan service. If you thought the previous movie threw a lot at you, this sequel doubles down on, well, everything. The characters, the Easter eggs, the references, the worlds - it’s all here, in abundance. And yeah, it’s a little too much. There’s such an overwhelming amount happening at any given moment that it becomes tough to fully care about any one element. Sadly, the story is paper-thin, which does keep the movie light and breezy, but it also means we never get a real exploration - let alone an explanation - of the vast cosmic ideas and characters it tosses our way. Still, what the film lacks in narrative depth, it makes up for visually. The computer animation is gloriously vibrant, bursting with color and detail in every frame. It’s a kaleidoscopic of vistas. The action sequences are as madcap and zippy as you’d expect, and the film’s breakneck pacing rarely gives you a moment to catch your breath. As for the voice cast, Chris Pratt’s return as our mustachioed plumber is once again perfectly fine while Charlie Day brings plenty of levity and warmth to Luigi. Jack Black, surprisingly, feels a bit underused this time around (no musical number?), whereas Benny Safdie goes all-in as Bowser Jr. - delivering an unexpectedly lively performance. And at just around ninety minutes, the whole movie breezes by, making it an effortlessly digestible experience. So, needless to say, if you’re already on board the Mario train, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is absolutely worth pressing play on… again.
