REVIEW SUMMARY
Ben Affleck’s Air is a remarkable story told by great actors through stellar direction. In short – it’s damn good filmmaking. The movie stands as part corporate drama and part sports film. It’s also a great character study of Nike’s “basketball guru,” Sonny Vaccaro. In one of his finest roles to date, Matt Damon portrays Sonny as a shlubby version of Jerry Maguire with the verbal gifts of Don Draper. He really is quite something. As are the rest of the A-grade cast, including a wonderful turn by the great Viola Davis who portrays Michael Jordan’s mother. And while the film revolves around Nike’s courtship of Michael and the his ground-breaking shoe line, deal, we never actually see the sports legend. Well, not his face anyways. Instead, we get to “see” and “feel” Michael’s presence through those around him. It’s a risky decision, but one that ultimately works. This isn’t a movie about Michael Jackson after all, it’s a movie about a small group of men who risk it all on an uncertain white whale capture. It’s about passion and foresight. It’s about gut feelings and paradigm shifts. It’s also set in the 80s, so there’s also a gloriously whammy soundtrack. Add in ample amounts of humour and a brisk pace, and you’ve got a must watch on your hands. So, when it comes to watching the most inspirational film of the year thus far - Just Do It!
