REVIEW SUMMARY
Overly predictable, but undeniably heart-warming, A Man Called Otto makes for a perfectly fine post-holiday dramedy. That is to say, you know exactly how this will all turn out after the first 10 minutes – like exactly. Does that make it any less effective? On the contrary, it makes the comfort factor that much stronger. It also helps that you actually like the characters and actively root for them. Tom Hanks is once again Mr. reliable, giving yet another strong character performance as the curmudgeon of all curmudgeons. And that’s saying something given his universally beloved reputation. There’s also a really great turn from Mariana Treviño, who plays opposite Hanks with great comedic affect. And that’s the other thing, this movie will make you laugh more than you think. But while it has charm and heart in spades, the themes of loss and the will to live are presented with plenty of gloss. It’s not a precision piece by any means, but the formula is played to perfection. And for that, the man called Otto is worth getting to know.
