REVIEW SUMMARY

An exceedingly pleasing coming-of-age gem, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret is an A-grade adaptation of Judy Blume’s beloved novel. Yes, it’s everything you wished it to be - genuinely funny, delightfully charming, and effortlessly heartfelt. And even with the 1970s time period intact, it remains as relatable as ever. Although, I’m sure those who read the book way back when are empathizing more with the mom than our young teen Margaret. But hey, that’s also part of the appeal, as the whole thing is universal in its themes – namely finding oneself amidst a flurry of changes. Luckily, the script is whip smart, providing a sunny takedown on everything that goes along with the awkwardness of puberty. And while religion(s) play a role in Margaret’s journey, just know that the film isn’t what I’d call “religious.” It asks a lot of questions about religion, but never solely becomes about that. It's just another thing Margaret needs to figure out is all. Speaking of our titular character, she is brought to life with ease by the charismatic Abby Ryder Fortson (a casting win). And, for her part, Rachel McAdams makes for a wonderful mom (she has her own journey too you know). Plus, Kathy Bates is always fun to watch, and this is certainly no exception. The movie’s biggest star, however, might just be its director, Kelly Fremon Craig. No matter all the blunt frankness, Craig keeps the proceedings jovial and entertaining throughout. With an injection of observant comedy and musical montages, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret stands as a surprisingly refreshing viewing experience. In short – it does Judy Blume justice!
