REVIEW SUMMARY
David Ayers A Working Man makes for yet another serviceable Jason Statham one-man-army tale of vengeance. Yep, the movie delivers what it sets out to do, but there’s no denying it’s a story you’ve seen countless times before. You see, it follows a well-worn formula, leading to a wholly predictable conclusion (to say the least). That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though. There’s a certain “comfort food” appeal to these type of vigilante actioners. And, watching Statham systematically take down bad guys one after another is undeniably satisfying. Ultimately, a film like this thrives on whether you can invest in the hero’s journey and revel in the villains getting what they deserve. And let’s be honest—it’s hard not to root for Jason Statham in just about anything. By now, he’s mastered the blend of quiet charm and pure badassery, making it look essentially effortless. Well, perhaps a little too effortless. I wouldn’t say he’s "phoning it in” here, but we are starting to flirt with that territory. Still, he gets the job done by “killing his way in” and “killing his way out.” And while the direction is solid, I expected a bit more visual flair from Ayer. There are glimpses of his signature stylized grit, but overall, it feels a little too generic for a “film by David Ayre.” Will this movie stick with you weeks from now? Probably not. But, in the moment? You’ll have a bazooka-sized blast.
