The mostly well executed Bird Box Barcelona adds just enough novel twists to make it a sufficient sequel. That is to say, it’s not some re-hash of the first film. That doesn’t mean it’s “better” though. Without the talents of Sandra Bullock this time around, the film lacks a central character to latch onto. Performances are fine and all, but there’s something to be said for “star power,” and this movie just doesn’t have it. This outing is also not as moving, as the film’s attempt at emotional relationships is admittedly quite weak. Luckily, the creep factor is still intact, as are the jarring scenes of violence. In fact, they up the gore and brutality here – providing us with more moments of horror than its predecessor. The aforementioned twist, which is faith based, adds a lot of narrative depth to the proceedings. It’s an interesting angle to play with for sure, and one that makes sense given the circumstances at hand. So, while not as fresh or affecting as the phenom that was the first movie, Bird Box Barcelona still stands as a sequel worth your gaze.
