SYNOPSIS

Is based on the DC Comics team Birds of Prey and is the 8th film in the DC Extended Universe, as well as a follow-up to Suicide Squad (2016).

It's open season on Harley Quinn when her explosive breakup with the Joker puts a big fat target on her back. Unprotected and on the run, Quinn faces the wrath of narcissistic crime boss Black Mask, his right-hand man, Victor Zsasz, and every other thug in the city. But things soon even out for Harley when she becomes unexpected allies with three deadly women -- Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya.

REVIEW SUMMARY

Vibrant and violent, Birds of Prey is a kooky kamikaze of chaos. Yep, for those familiar with Harley Quinn’s source material (the DC comics and cartoons), you’ll be happy to know this film does the character justice – and then some. Margot Robbie expertly combines Harley’s glee and rage, making her so likeable that you’ll unwaveringly root for her, even though her moral compass is not only broken, it’s been smashed to pieces. And while much has been made of the film’s feminist / girl power themes, this isn’t quite Captain Marvel. The movie does tackle the many aspects of misogyny, but it does so in unique fashion. It’s like Kill Bill meets Deadpool with a splash of Bugs Bunny. The filmmakers clearly nailed the essence of one Harley Quinn, but not all characters work quite as well - looking at you Cassandra Cain. Major props do need to be given to Ewan McGregor however, as he makes for a delightfully neurotic psycho as Black Mask! As for plot, well, it’s all very messy. But given Quinn plays narrator throughout, the back and forth time jumps and flashback story montages all somehow work. You’ll also notice Gotham City looks very different here, as seen through the eyes of Harley, it’s less gothic doom and gloom, and more bubble gum bright. Again, it all works for the movie it’s in. And while the action scenes hit hard with a few creative moments, some of the fight choreography is admittedly over the top (people don’t really do 360 degree flips every time they get kicked in the face do they?). But any way you look at it, Birds Of Prey is simply one fantabulous bit of bonkers fun! No Joker needed.
