REVIEW SUMMARY
A fiercely fun and delightfully twisty takedown of toxic relationships, Drew Hancock’s Companion is an entertaining genre-bender through and through. Part sci-fi thriller, part horror slasher and all dark comedy, the movie wonderfully blends its components well, making for a skillfully constructed viewing experience. In fact, it serves as a great blend of films the likes of The Stepford Wives, Ex Machina and Ready or Not. And while the movie has lots to say about its various themes (from controlling relationships to greed), it’s clear Companion simply wants to entertain. And entertain it does, this thanks to its many twists and turns. Add in witty dialogue and fun editing cuts, the “woman in peril” narrative never falls into overly formulaic territory. I mean, cliches and tropes are still abound, but there’s enough original takes on things to keep it all fresh. Another big part of the appeal is the cast at hand. Jack Quaid is perfect for this particular role. The second gen actor is deceptively lovable, while Sophie Thatcher is convincingly captivating as the conflicted robot on a mission. And while there are some gruesome kills, the movie’s tongue-in-cheek nature keeps it from getting too nasty or darkly gruesome. So, while likely won’t find yourself “scared” at any point, you’ll certainly have no problem staying wholly amused - from start to finish.
