REVIEW SUMMARY

I must confess, Fletch’s return to the screen is a solidly entertaining one. Now, I must also confess, it is mostly thanks to the sly charms of Jon Hamm. Don’t get me wrong, the movie, in a lot of ways, is a welcome throwback to the comedies of yesteryear. Gone are the forced-fed joke-a-minute goofs and gags, and in its place are low key moments that build to a greater enjoyment. Trust me, it works well for the little mystery tale we’re served up. That story, however, isn’t anything overly special - or memorable for that matter. Nope, it’s actually our aforementioned star who will be remembered most when all is said and done. Hamm’s take on the character is subtle, playing the goofiness with just enough refinement. You see, Fletch is still a troublesome and odd duck, but he’s much more believable as a capable investigative journalist (not to mention ladies man). This isn’t Inspector Clouseau, but it’s also not James Bond. It’s a nice mix right in the middle. Also, luckily for us, there is a more than capable gaggle of side-characters to amuse us as well. So, can a Fletch film re-boot work without Chevy Chase's involvement? The answer is most certainly yes. Mystery solved!
