SYNOPSIS

In the near future, a woman named Sara hears that she is terminally ill. To save her family from the pain of losing her, she opts for a cloning procedure of herself and trains the clone to feel like her. However, Sara makes a miraculous recovery, which drives her to a new problem: in the society of the future, humans cannot exist for longer than the time limit of their clones. By law, Sara and her clone must eventually fight each other to the death.

REVIEW SUMMARY

The deadpan humour and unique concepts blend ever so nicely in Riley Stearn’s sci-fi / comedy Dual. Firstly, however, I must say that this will not be for everyone. It’s a rather low-key film centred around cloning. It also has the comedy vibe of, say, Napoleon Dynamite. So, don’t expect big action set pieces (although the opening battle scene is pretty fun), or any kind of overt explanations. What you can expect, though, is a well-acted bit of subtle strangeness with plenty to ponder. Yes, this is a movie flooding with themes surrounding life, death, aging, and, well, the human existence as a whole. There are some smart little turns in the script too, keeping it from being one note and predictable. The performances also elevate the material, with Karen Gillan doing a phenomenal job in her (ahem) dual roles. And for fans of Aaron Paul, just know that his appearance is only slightly above “cameo” level. Watching him dance choreographed hip-hop is certainly worth it however! And, at only an hour and a half, this is an extremely breezy watch. Trust me, Dual is the ultra-dry-humoured sci-fi cloning flick you didn’t know you needed in your life.
