REVIEW SUMMARY

Chock-full of fantastical fun and mythological merriment, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is quite the surprising crowd-pleaser. For starters, the film doesn’t take itself too seriously, leaning into the bizarre elements of the storied D&D world and tackling them with comical precision. In short, this isn’t Game of Thrones (by any means). What it is, however, is an uproarious mythic adventure from start to finish. The witty banter and zippy action enhance the entertainment value plenty, as do the cast of actors tasked with bringing it all to life. There’s great chemistry amongst them, with a more than capable Chris Pine leading the way. Of course, Hugh Grant also continues his winning ways as a slippery heel (anyone remembers Paddington 2?). On the story front, there’s plenty of amusing side quests and journeys abound, even if things get fairly predictable by the end. Luckily, the film is brimming with heart, illuminating some genuine feelgood themes around friendship and family. It all comes together nicely, turning what could have been a convoluted mess into a rather comprehendible delight. Is it perfect? Not quite, thanks mostly to some moments of shoddy CGI and a handful of cliches. But as far as popcorn flicks go, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves delivers blockbuster entertainment in spades. Go on, you’ll want to roll the dice on this one!
