REVIEW SUMMARY
When it comes to Mel Gibson’s Flight Risk, you’ll need to leave your brain at the door to make the extra bumpy ride bearable. Yep, this is sadly a nonsense-filled journey that tries (and ultimately fails) to make us care about the fate of the three characters onboard. The problem is that they are all incredibly unlikable, not to mention annoying. So – very – annoying. Ok, so Michelle Dockery’s agent Madelyn has some redeeming qualities, but they are at constant odds with her poor decision-making skills. What could have been a claustrophobic and tense tale with our 3 leads cramped on a tiny plane, becomes an exercise in farfetched excess. They throw everything they can at us to make things extra dire and suspenseful. Unfortunately, none of it is effective, this thanks to the aforementioned implausibility and, frankly, dull outcomes. There’s also a lot of nonsense about loyalties between the good guys. You know, the whole “who’s the mole?” stuff. But, with the drama playing out over the phone, it never reaches any reasonable level of intrigue. Perhaps the movie’s saving grace is Mark Wahlberg. Sure, his villainous portrayal is pretty out there, but at least he’s giving it a “balls to the wall” effort. The same cannot be said for our director though. Gibson directs this thing with all the clunkiness of a turbulence-ridden plane ride. Odd and jarring cuts with lousy transitions make it a ho-hum effort at best. Not to mention it's not what I’d call a “pretty looking” picture. Luckily, at only 90 minutes, things don’t drag on too long. So, safe to say Flight Risk is not the taut thrill ride in the sky it wants to be. It's more of a treacherous trek stuck on auto pilot
