REVIEW SUMMARY
A devilishly intriguing deconstruction of religion, Scott Beck & Bryan Woods’ Heretic has clearly been blessed by the movie Gods. For starters, the film is never not enticing, throwing new ideas and sinister twists at us throughout. It’s also the rare movie that truly keeps you guessing until the very end. And while that ending does veer into commonplace horror movie trappings, the movie overall steers clear of cheap scares – instead opting for more psychological dread. Yep, it’s a very cerebral (not to mention uneasy) viewing experience. The menacing vibe is helped greatly be a pitch perfect performance from Hugh Grant. Playing against type, Grant’s fiendish output is all kinds of creepy. Like he does to the characters in the film, the veteran actor slowly pulls us in with his charm, only to trap us in complete terror. Trust me, you too will be helpless in falling for his “game.” As for the devout themes at hand, Heretic, through its characters, offers plenty to chew on. There are theories, stories, refutes, and analogies galore. In short, it’ll make you think amidst all the frights. And hey, that’s a miracle in and of itself.
