REVIEW SUMMARY

Justin Tipping’s Him is a hyperactive sports-horror spectacle that slams your senses—sometimes brilliantly, sometimes to the point of irritation. It does deserve credit for being wholly unique though - blending trippy, violent art-house vibes with blood-soaked athletic ambition. However, it admittedly tips into excess and, at times, resembles a glorified music video. What really saves it are the incredibly striking visuals and genuinely hellish imagery – making it a true visual feast. As for the cast, Marlon Wayans is a revelation here - diving headfirst into twisted, tormented, and unsettling territory with unnerving commitment. Trust me, this is a career highlight for the Wayans brother. Meanwhile, Tyriq Withers puts out a raw, convincing turn as a hungry young up-and-comer. Their shared drive gives the film its emotional core. You believe in these characters. And, you buy into their obsessive quest to become the GOAT. The problem is that Him often feels like style over substance. For one, the plot unfolds rather predictably. Its themes of sacrifice and the mantra of “no guts, no glory” are sketched out only in broad strokes. Repetition also dulls the edges - with the true horror story it aims for never fully materializing. Still, there’s no denying its entertainment value. Heck, the final act leaves plenty of blood on the gridiron, even if it stops short of being a GOAT-level horror offering.
