REVIEW SUMMARY
A breezy, silly misfire, Mafia Mamma sure ain’t The Godfather. It’s actually not so much a movie as it is a concept. Yes, it’s a semi-funny idea, but one that has no business being a feature length film starring bona fide A-list talent. I don’t even think it would get very far in an SNL pitch meeting. But, for her part, Toni Collette commits to the buffoonery of it all with gusto. But let’s face it, she ultimately deserves better – as does her co-star, the internationally renowned Monica Bellucci. These fiercely talented ladies are given lame dialogue to spew in even lamer scenarios. It doesn’t help that the whole thing is predictable to the nth degree. On the plus side, the genuine Italian backdrops are gorgeous to take in. In fact, with a full-on Italian cast and a toe-tapping Italian soundtrack, there is an authentic feel to the film’s locale. Unfortunately, the uninspired script, overdone cliches, and insipid character motivations sink the movie as if it were wearing cement shoes! What could have been an interesting feminist twist on the mob genre, amounts to a bland serving of regret – “Fuhgeddaboudit!”
