REVIEW SUMMARY
Disappointingly vapid and toothless, Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman deserve so much better than the sub-par “thriller” that is Miller’s Girl. The main issue is that the movie is slog in every which way. The scenes and dialogue are drawn out way too much. There’s “slow burn” and then there’s this. And, sadly, not enough effort is given to making any of it believable. The movie hinges on the connection and tensions between teacher and student (Freeman and Ortega). Here, however, there is no believable connection. The broad strokes of a connection are there, but there’s absolutely no depth to it. So, it makes it really hard buy into any of the subsequent mind games. To be fair, Ortega does a decent enough job as her character. She’s restrained and turns subtly creepy in all the right ways. The big finish is also tensionless, with little to no payoff. I mean, it’s watchable – with a surprisingly solid soundtrack – but it’s ultimately the definition of a forgettable film.
