REVIEW SUMMARY

Dev Patel’s directorial debut, Monkey Man, pulsates with hard hitting action and tangible electricity. It is the definition of visceral cinema. And, it may just be the best action movie you’ll see all year! Patel also stars in the movie as Kid, a young man who competes in an underground fight club where he dons a monkey mask. With rage boiling inside, Kid enters a quest for vengeance against those who killed his mother and victimize the powerless. And, what can I say, he’s really great in the role. There’s a remarkable transformation that takes place throughout the movie for this character. Heck, at the mid-way point it almost becomes a gritty superhero film (definite shades of Batman). Naturally, the film is action-packed and filled with everything from hand-to-hand combat to explosions to car chases. It’s not as slick as say the John Wick movies, but it’s just as brutal. There are some cool uses of colour and lighting though, as well an invigorating soundtrack. And while Monkey Man may not reinvent the wheel (plenty of social political commentaries here), it delivers a raw spectacle action fans shouldn’t miss!
