REVIEW SUMMARY

A rather dull-fanged downer, Morbius may have made a decent comic book film in 2003, but with today’s standards, it’s an increasingly dull experience. And while there are many problems at play, the actors and their performances are not one of them. Say what you will about Jared Leto, but the man knows how to throw himself into a role and make it his own. I genuinely liked Leto as Doctor Michael Morbius and thought there were interesting nuances that he played with. Matt Smith also made for a killer baddie, clearly having a blast in the role. Unfortunately, the script did neither of them any favours. For one, it falls into nonsensical territory more times than not (it’s best not to think too much into any of the so-called science stuff). And, amidst all the head scratching you’ll be doing, you may also be rolling your eyes at the uninspired special effects. The whole wispy “colour bleed” thing is so overused at this point, not to mention done better (way better) in other movies. Then there’s the rather rushed and anti-climactic final showdown. Not nearly enough was set up to make me care about the formulaic outcome we get. In short, it’s a rote journey to the very end. The biggest sin, however, is the clunky (and again, ludicrous) end credits scenes. It all feels like a bait and switch, one that teases what’s to come rather than satisfy the here and now. Yes, Morbius has been delayed for nearly 2 years, but trust me when I tell you, it was not worth the wait!
