Will Gluck’s One Night Only has a whole lot of flirty, cliched fun that makes the most of its clumsy premise, with the chemistry between its leads doing much of the heavy lifting. Yes, thank the casting Gods for Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro, because their playful, spirited connection is absolutely on point here. And for any rom-com, that’s the key to the whole thing. Do we care? Do we actually want to see this pair get together? Happily, in One Night Only, the answer is yes. But, because this is a true rom-com, the predictable nature of the narrative is cranked to an 11. With nearly every cliché in the book making an appearance, the film isn’t exactly breaking new ground. That’s especially ironic given its utterly ludicrous premise - which is ultimately the movie’s biggest weakness. You see, in this world, unmarried Americans only have one night a year when they can legally “get it on.” It’s basically The Purge, but instead of murder, it’s… relations. Okay, so it’s admittedly a slightly interesting concept, and there’s plenty of potential in exploring what a world built around such a thing might actually look like. The problem is that the movie seems determined to over-explain it. We get tid bits from news clips on how this came to be. We also see how the system supposedly works - microchip tattoos that switch from green to red (I’m not joking). Protection is also mandatory on this “special” night, which raises the obvious question of exactly how something like that would be enforced. It’s best not think about it too hard, because every answer the movie provides only seems to add three more questions, and none of them do the film any favors. Fortunately, the movie knows exactly what it has in Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro, who bring enough charm and smolder to keep things moving even when the premise threatens to derail the whole affair. So, while One Night Only may be one night too many for its premise, Turner and Barbaro make sure it’s not a complete date-night disaster.
