REVIEW SUMMARY

Sofia Coppola’s On the Rocks plays like a father-daughter screwball comedy, and frankly, it’s one that goes down smooth. It should be noted that the film is a lot lighter than Coppola’s other works (including her previous Bill Murray starring film - Lost in Translation). But that’s not a bad thing, as the comedy always seems to hit its mark here. That’s not to say there isn’t any drama to be found - the movie’s main plot delves into the topics of trust and abandonment after all. But, while there’s certainly some “life lessons” to be found by the end, it admittedly lacks the narrative depth you might be expecting. What really works here though, are the characters involved. Murray and Rashida Jones have delightful chemistry together, bringing about all the goofy warmth you can handle from this father-daughter duo, while also expertly portraying their complicated relationship. There’s a particularly wonderful aged charm on Murray’s end, making his every appearance an exceedingly welcome one. So, do yourself a favour, pour out a cold one and strap in for some surprisingly heartwarming amusement with a true Hollywood treasure – Mr. Bill Murray!
