Gerald Butler's still got it! Yep, Jean-Francois Richet's Plane sticks the landing thanks to Butler's effortless action hero bravado. And it's a good thing, because without a capable performance at the forefront, this down the middle actioner would have fallen into direct to DVD "dollar bin" territory. That's because the script, the dialogue, and action are all pretty standard stuff. Although, there are a few gunfight sequences that had a bit more bite than I was expecting. There is also an undeniable "old school" comfort to the film. It's not on the same level as say Diehard or Speed, but it plays by the same 90s action movie rules. Simple setup, to the point challenges to overcome, but, with decent character development. And with Butler leading the charge, it all goes down easy. Yes, for all intents and purposes, Plane gets the job done - just don't expect a first class aerial experience.
