REVIEW SUMMARY
A deliciously unhinged Nikolas Cage easily overpowers the anemic plot in Chris McKay’s Renfiled. Yes, the role of Dracula was seemingly tailor made for the enigmatic thespian, as he possesses all the requisite psychotic charm one needs for the part. Clearly sinking his teeth into things, Cage is a devilishly fun scene stealer throughout. Sadly, his screen time is rather limited, thus making room for the rest of the cast. Leading the pack is the always stellar Nicholas Hoult, who more than holds his own opposite Cage (no easy feat) in a Johnny Depp type performance. We also get lots of Awkwafina doing her thing as a cop with an axe to grind. Then there’s Ben Schwartz who, admittedly, goes a little too over the top in his role as the bratty son of a mob boss. He does snort a CGI millipede as if it were a line of cocaine, which I guess is pretty cool. The performances aren’t the only things that stand out though, as the action is gloriously stylized – not to mention creatively violent. Add in a bouncily brisk pace and some clever gags, and it all adds up to an effortlessly enjoyable skull-crushing good time. I only wish they padded the startlingly short 1h 30m runtime with more narrative depth and some added character development. I mean, they had the room to play with. Regardless, Renfield stands as yet another bloody good surprise at the cinemas this year. Cheers to that!
