Mark Williams’ Blacklight is a by the book Liam Neeson action thriller with little thrills and uninspired action. Yes, this is a movie you’ve seen a million times before – and they all likely starred Neeson. Unfortunately, this one is bottom of the barrel in terms of quality. The “twists” are predictable. The characters are one dimensional. The plot is laughable. The production quality is cheap. The conclusion is lame. The only thing that really works here is Neeson, who yet again, is fun to watch in the action hero role. Does he do anything different in this movie that we haven’t seen him do before? Nope. In fact, he puts in the minimum effort. But, there’s still something enjoyable about this 69-year-old Irish actor taking out the bad guys. I get the whole “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mindset, but we’re at a point where it’s kinda broke – at the very least tired. Also, with the movie pushing 2 hours, it also pushed my attention span. The payoff just wasn’t there. So, once again, this latest Liam Neeson outing is really just for the hardcore Liam Neeson fans out there. For everyone else, a Taken re-watch will prove much more effective!
