SYNOPSIS

Is a live cinematic-stage production recording of the Broadway musical of the same name, which is inspired by the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow.

Depicts the life and career of Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the Caribbean island of Nevis. The first act covers Hamilton's arrival in New York City, his work as an aide-de-camp to General George Washington, and how he met and married Eliza Schuyler. The second act covers Hamilton's postwar work as the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and his death.

REVIEW SUMMARY

Rejoice Hamilton fans, this filmed version of the blockbuster Broadway play oozes bombastic energy in every way! To be clear, this isn’t a stage to film adaptation, it’s a filmed version of a stage show. Don’t let that sway you away though, as the camera techniques used here are wonderful, giving the wide shots a real “wow factor,” while swooping in for overhead angles and closeups when needed. It’s literally better than a front row seat. The charismatic talents of Lin Manuel Miranda make it even more worthwhile, as he will no doubt sing, rap and act his way into your hearts. The one thing that did throw me off however, is that they included the audience reactions (it was filmed, or at least mostly, in front of a crowd). Hearing applause and whistles after each song number can take you out of the moment, at least it did for me. Plus, there is a 60 second “intermission” that is presented on screen with an hourglass graphic to break up the “acts.” Not sure what you can do in 60 seconds though – that’s one quick bathroom break! But, all in all, if you are a fan of musical theatre, this is an absolute must watch. And, if you’re not, this might just make you one.
