SYNOPSIS

Based on the 2012 novel Firing Point by Don Keith and George Wallace

Deep under the Arctic Ocean, American submarine Captain Joe Glass is on the hunt for a U.S. sub in distress when he discovers a secret Russian coup is in the offing, threatening to dismantle the world order. Captain Glass must now assemble an elite group of Navy SEALs to rescue the kidnapped Russian president and sneak through enemy waters to stop WWIII from beginning.

REVIEW SUMMARY

Decent, mediocre, standard… these are all words that came to mind after watching Hunter Killer. And while the story feels a bit dated, there are some genuinely tense moments sprinkled throughout. However, the film suffers greatly from being overly bloated with an abundance of subplots and wayyyyy too many characters to follow / care about. If only the filmmakers trimmed the fat and gone with a more taut approach. Gerard Butler does do fine work here, but Gary Oldman is a little over kill in a rare scenery chewing performance. In the end, Hunter Killer ultimately amounts to just so-so submarine suspense.
