REVIEW SUMMARY

David Ayer’s The Beekeeper is a worthy exercise in over-the-top vengeance! The film just does so many things right. For one, it really makes you hate the people you are supposed to hate and truly root for the hero – a more-than up or the task Jason Statham. Seriously, Statham’s acts of beast mode prove he’s still a master of the action game. He’s a man of few words, but his movements and mannerisms speak volumes. Plus, after all these years, he’s still believably bad ass. The movie also benefits from some witty dialogue and effortless interactions. What could have been a paint-by-numbers screenplay, instead becomes nuance-filled fun. Ok, maybe there were a bit too much “bee analogies.” Luckily, Statham’s supporting cast came to play also, with Jeremy Irons being especially diabolical and Josh Hutcherson as wormy as can be (in a good way). Plus, there was some intriguing world-building along the way. Like John Wick’s debut outing, there too is a lot more than meets the eye with this character (and where’s been). And, with some minor predictability aside, there’s no denying that The Beekeeper is a quality slice of the vengeance actioner genre. And like a spoon full of honey, it goes down oh-so smooth – with a helping of shattering explosions that is.
