WIDOWS – “A damn good gritty heist thriller”

Widows

RATING

DIRECTOR

Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave - 2013)

STARRING

SYNOPSIS

Is based upon the 1983 British ITV series of the same name.

A police shootout leaves four thieves dead during an armed robbery attempt in Chicago. Their widows -- Veronica, Linda, Alice and Belle -- have nothing in common except a debt left behind by their spouses' criminal activities. Hoping to forge a future on their own terms, they join forces to pull off a heist that Veronica’s husband was planning.

REVIEW SUMMARY

Widows is one damn good gritty heist thriller! The story is compelling from the start and dripping with tension throughout. On a side note - no one does "cold as ice" quite like Viola Davis. This woman is the queen of mean - and I mean this in the best way possible. The stakes in this film are truly high and it isn't long before McQueen has you eating right out of his (directing) hands. I could have done without one plot twist though (no spoilers), as it seemed rather cheap for such a well crafted narrative. Otherwise, this is a downright A-grade effort by all involved.
