SYNOPSIS

Is based on the true to life story of Ray McElrathbey.

REVIEW SUMMARY

Forgive the pun, but Disney’s latest inspirational sports film, Safety, plays it a little too safe. That doesn’t mean it’s not enjoyable though, as the film does do a nice enough job of creating moments of fun and endearment. The problem is that it is all too glossy and smoothed over to be genuine. For a film that deals with themes of abandonment, drug addiction, and sacrifice, a couple of rough edges were certainly needed here. The good news is that it succeeds in providing the requisite amount of inspiration (if you don’t get a warm and fuzzy feeling in the final moments, then I suggest you see a doctor). Jay Reeves also deserves praise for his role as Ray. Appearing in nearly every scene, Reeves carries the movie with a large helping of charisma and charm. It goes a long way for sure, it’s just too bad there wasn’t more narrative grit for him to play with.
