REVIEW SUMMARY
Josh Greenbaum’s Strays is Homeward Bound on acid – and I mean that in the best way possible. Yep, this movie has cute talking dogs on an epic adventure, but that adventure includes excessively humping lawn decorations, peeing on each other, eating magic mushrooms, constantly discussing their genitals, and swearing up a storm! Oh, there’s also a “dog poop” scene to beat all other dog poop scenes (try to finish your popcorn early). In short, it is raunchy, crude, and aggressively vulgar. But, is it funny? For the most part. You see, having these adorable dogs do and say the things that they do is both shocking and amusing. The Looney Tunes-esque hijinks lead to a scattershot of laughs, as some gags work way better than others. Luckily, there’s enough genuine heart added to the mix that it balances things out – making for more than a few moments of affecting sweetness. And, what can I say, Will Farrell as the voice of a naive Border Terrier is infectiously fun, as is a fiery Jamie Foxx who voices the surprisingly layered Boston Terrier, Bug. So, if you’re looking for a sophisticated yarn with lots of comedic depth, you’ll be barking up the wrong tree with Strays. But, if it’s a bawdy raunch-fest with some warm and fuzzy moments thrown in, then boy, this bone is for you!
