REVIEW SUMMARY

Judd Apatow’s meta-Hollywood satire, The Bubble, is big on star power, but short on laughs. Yes, it’s one large showbiz industry parody, but it unfortunately has very little to say. I mean, if you are going to skewer the entertainment business, maybe have a point to it all (or at least go beyond surface level spoofing). Alas, the film’s saving grace is it’s cast, all of whom appear game for the over-the-top shenanigans. If anything, it was really great to see David Duchovny on our screens again. And rest assured, his deadpan humour is still very much amusing! What isn’t so amusing, however, is the film’s bloated runtime. A throw-away comedy of this nature has no business pushing the 2 hour and 10-minute mark. But push it does, as the parade of characters run the gamut of absurdity. Listen, I’d be lying if I said there weren’t moments of legitimate humour. Heck, half of the cast is inherently funny (notably Fred Armisen and Guz Khan). But, with Judd Apatow at the helm, I expected a more genuine comedy experience - you know, given his past works and all. But even with a lack of that trademark "Apatow heart," it still manages to go down easy enough. If only this bubble didn't take over 2 hours to burst...
