SYNOPSIS

Based on Angie Thomas2017 novel of same name.

Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds -- the poor, mostly black neighborhood where she lives and the wealthy, mostly white prep school that she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is soon shattered when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend at the hands of a police officer.

REVIEW SUMMARY

The Hate U Give proves that the YA genre of films can be more than just post apocalyptic fantasy and tragic teen love stories. What we get in this film is powerful and honest storytelling that's worth celebrating. And while it does have lots to say about race, corruption, white privilege, class systems etc, it never gets preachy.  Also helping matters is that our teen protagonist is played to perfection by Amanda Stenberg – a genuine young talent who shines so very bright here (definitely living up to her character’s name: Starr). Trust me when I say, The Hate U Give deserves some real love.
