REVIEW SUMMARY
Netflix’s The Old Guard brings with it a welcome new vision to the superhero genre. So, while the violent action sequences are nothing overly spectacular here, it’s actually the story that’s surprisingly sophisticated. The idea of being “immortal” and the impact it would have on human history is explored rather well, with plenty of interesting tidbits for audiences to ponder. In addition to the thoughtful plot, the film benefits from a great cast of captivating leads. Charlize Theron, who let’s face it, has the kick-ass heroine thing down to a tee at this point, especially shines in another strong and stoic role. She should probably just do all the action movies from now on! The biggest downfall the film has going against it, however, is its blatant (and annoying) attempts to set up a sequel/cinematic universe. Did they not learn from 2017’s The Mummy reboot not to count their chickens before they hatch? Luckily, all the “sequel seed planting” isn’t enough to derail this enjoyable character-driven actioner!
