REVIEW SUMMARY

Creepy with a capital C, but derivative with a capital D, The Pope’s Exorcist is a big 'ol mixed bag. On the one hand, Russell Crowe is easy to root for in the Catholic “hero” type portrayal. Trust me, his effortless acting prowess goes a long way in making the often-silly supernatural horror-schtick work. And while there’s plenty of creepy imagery and uneasy atmosphere to go around, the movie never gives us anything we haven’t seen before. And while the “inspired by true events” claim adds some intrigue to the proceedings, it’s sadly just another rehash and mix-mash of all the other religious horror flicks that have come before. The difference is that this one stars Russell Crowe. And frankly, they’re lucky to have him. So, while the demonic possessions and multitude of jump scares are all standard-issue stuff, it’s our lead actor who mercifully elevates it to a notch above damned status. I just pray the next possession-filled film gets some heavenly help in the plot department.
