THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD – “The good news: Angelina Jolie’s still got it”
Taylor Sheridan (Wind River – 2017)
- Angelina Jolie as Hannah Faber
- Finn Little as Connor Casserly
- Nicholas Hoult as Patrick Blackwell
- Aidan Gillen as Jack Blackwell
- Jon Bernthal as Ethan Sawyer
- Tyler Perry as Officer Arthur Phillip
Is based on Michael Koryta's novel of the same name
Pursued by Jack and Patrick Blackwell, two assassins who killed his father, Conner Casserly meets veteran fire warden and wilderness survival expert Hannah Faber, who offers him shelter in her lookout tower. When the assassins set fire to the forest in order to find the pair, Faber and Casserly must both survive a deadly blaze that threatens to consume them and outwit the killers on their trail.
The good news: Angelina Jolie’s still got it! The bad news: this is an average paint-by-numbers action throwback. Ok, so the 90’s action formula still provides a helping of fun here, but it owes most of that enjoyment to its cast. As alluded to, Jolie completely owns her role as a rebel “smoke jumper” with a tragic backstory. She also manages some pretty incredible chemistry with her pint-sized co-star, Finn Little (I guess the little guy deserves credit for that too). Meanwhile, our merciless assassin duo, compiled of Nicholas Hoult and Aiden Gillen, are equally amusing, spewing majorly entertaining banter throughout. Add in the underrated gem that is Jon Bernthal, and a slick cameo from Tyler Perry, and you got quite the solid cast of characters. It’s a bit of shame then, that the action is overly stale, giving way to silliness more times than not. To be fair, Sheridan’s direction does add a nice jolt to the proceedings. So, if you’re in the mood for some 90’s level action fun, Those Who Wish Me Dead has got you covered. As for me, I’m just happy to see Angelina Jolie saving the day again!
