REVIEW SUMMARY

Mostly captivating, but ultimately forgettable, To Catch a Killer makes for a decent serial killer crime drama – no more, no less. I will admit that Shailene Woodley fits nicely in this “Clarice Sterling-like” role, owning the character with genuine heart and courage. She’s more than believable, and so is her co-star, veteran acting great Ben Mendelsohn. And if they seem like an odd pairing, you’re not wrong. But, there’s just enough chemistry between them to make it all work. And that’s the thing, it all works just fine - with “fine” being the operative word. There’s nothing overly cinematic about the film (minus a few bursts of brazen violence), and there’s definitely plenty of other offerings (both on the big screen and small) that have done the cat-and-mouse serial killer chase better. To Catch a Killer isn’t a genre game changer, nor does it add anything new to it. It surely has its moments of suspense though. And with a solid cast at play, this gritty crime drama will no doubt keep you intrigued throughout. But, will you remember any of it the following day? Not likely.
