REVIEW SUMMARY
This latest adaptation of Anna Sewell’s literary classic is the sentimental "girl meets horse" tale you expect it to be. And, as you might also expect, it all looks beautiful – especially those running stallion shots. But despite the visual wonders onscreen, the movie lacks a certain energy, playing out at what feels like “half speed.” And, while the story is as harmless and well-meaning as they come, that doesn’t mean it needs to be so blatantly hokey and bland in its execution. To say the filmmakers play it safe here would be a gross understatement. Luckily, Mackenzie Foy makes for a great Jo, and Kate Winslet’s narration as the titular Beauty is sweetly soothing throughout. So, while most adults (and those familiar with the source material) will likely scoff at this overly “vanilla” attempt, a much younger crowd will surely enjoy the journey just fine.
