REVIEW SUMMARY
With a Godly amount of Bonkers fun, Thor: Love and Thunder will surely send fanboys and fangirls home with a smile! Doubling down on the wacky silliness introduced in Thor: Ragnarök, director Taika Waititi goes for laughs in every instance. The problem is that the comedy doesn’t always work – it’s batting about a 70/30. Luckily, he has also blended the film with some genuine heartfelt emotion. The actors play a big part in this of course, as Christian Bale and Natalie Portman deliver some wonderfully tender moments. Bale also goes all in with his villainous portrayal too, showing shades of, ironically, the Joker. It really is great stuff! I was also happy to see Portman get a bit of a “redemption” arc here, as her character surely deserved better. As for our star, Chris Hemsworth, the hulking actor is effortless in his appeal at this point. The Thor character is fully realized, and this more relaxed take is perfect for Hemsworth. On the story front, things are a little less impressive. Sure, the stakes are high, but it never feels like these characters are in any real danger of losing. The pacing is also somewhat odd, with more than a few flashbacks making for some disjointedness at the start. It came close to be a mess, but the movie finds its footing in the third act, sticking the landing with a crowd-pleasing finale. And, depending on your connection to certain characters, you can expect a few tears to be shed (no spoilers of course). Yes, Thor: Love and Thunder is another win for the folks at Marvel, but it doesn’t rank among the best of the best. Regardless, the God of Thunder will rock you once again – and for that, we thank him!
