REVIEW SUMMARY
Simply put, Danny and Michael Philippou’s Talk To Me will scare the sh*t out of you, or at the very least ruin a few good nights of sleep. Not since Hereditary has a horror movie come along with as much verve and vigour and left such a scarring impression. Yep, what could have simply been another gimmicky exercise in cheap jump scare cinema, is instead a deeply affecting creep-fest with a slew of standout performances – notably Sophie Wilde as the desperately damaged Mia (although 16-year-old Joe Bird makes for one hell of a possessed kid). There’s also something to be said for the twin-brother directors’ practical effects and masterful use of makeup. The unnerving visuals are sure to get imbedded in your brain, as are the disturbing audio cues (screams, gurgles, and thuds – oh my). The elevated horror does get a little predictable towards the end however, but the unsettling tension never diminishes. And while there could have easily been more narrative pieces added to some of the characters, the film opts to keep things nice and taut – never once overstaying its welcome. The filmmakers also do a nice job of showing restraint and not glamorising the mental health themes at play. So yes, if it’s a biting horror offering you crave this Summer, you’ll definitely want to reach out for Talk To Me and say “I’ll let me in.”
