REVIEW SUMMARY
Top tier sci-fi in nearly every way, Gareth Edwards’ The Creator serves as a timely feast for high concept-loving moviegoers. Yes, this is yet another excellently crafted gritty and visceral output by the director of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Here, Edwards takes a timely subject (the rapid growth of artificial intelligence) and molds a future world that is both believable and complicatedly beautiful (well, minus the ongoing brutal war that is). The problem, however, is that you will feel as if you’ve seen this movie before (and not just because of the spoiler heavy trailer). It’s mainly because The Creator draws inspiration and imagery from SO many other iconic motion pictures. It’s part The Terminator and Bladerunner, but it also falls in line with the likes of Apocalypse Now and Children of Men. Now, all of those movies are A-grade great, so it’s not such a bad thing. Plus, the future lived-in world on display is so tangibly raw, you can’t help but be in awe of it. That is to say, this is not some cheap knock off. On the performances front, John David Washington delivers a career best as a conflicted and torturedly desperate soul. The film’s true scene-stealer, though, is youngster Madeleine Yuna Voyles as Alfie. Prepare yourself folks, Voyles will simultaneously warm your heart while at the same time breaking it. So yes, while The Creator is overly familiar, there are still plenty of remarkable aspects to make it stand on its own. This review was not written by AI – or was it?
