Ok, I’ll say it, the 2024 musical Mean Girls film is actually pretty fetch. Was there any real need to make this hybrid of the 2004 film and Broadway musical? Not at all. But, that doesn’t make it any less entertaining. And really, that’s what this movie does for its near 2-hour runtime – entertains! For one, the entire cast is impeccable (both the returning and new faces). Renee Rapp as Regina George is especially great, as she not only embodies the character that Rachel McAdams made famous, but adds her own twists. That goes for everyone really. However, if I’m being honest, this new version sanitizes the “meanness” of the original a little too much. “The Plastics” are offensive-lite and nowhere near as nasty as they were originally portrayed. That’s not the only update the movie has going for (or against) it, though. There’s plenty of new jokes and sassy punchlines to go around. Of course, the biggest change to the original film is all the music. And, well, it’s fun. There truly are some standout musical numbers with impressive choreography. And thankfully, it doesn’t feel “tacked on.” In fact, the film has a wonderful pace to it, easily hitting all the key plot points while also throwing some clever winks and genuine surprises along the way. So, it’s best you “get in loser” and check it out for yourself.
