Pitch-perfect performances, pitch-black humor, and a streak of discomfort combine into something genuinely great in Kristoffer Borgil’s The Drama. And that title couldn’t be more apt as there is plenty of drama here. And while the early stretch plays like a sharp, slightly off-kilter relationship comedy, the film reveals a big twist – a revelation that upends everything. Just when you think you know what kind of movie this is, Borgli yanks the rug right out from under you – in a good way of course. From that moment on, The Drama becomes a wonderfully precarious tightrope walk of tonal shifts - veering from cringe-comedy to psychological tension to raw emotional honesty. Impressively, it’s all handled with a deft touch - the movie never spirals out of control, even though it gives itself countless opportunities to do so. That control is a testament not only to Borgli’s direction but also to the magnetic presence of its stars, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. Their chemistry is undeniable, and both bring a grounded likability to characters who are suddenly navigating an intensely uncomfortable crisis. Watching them push through this massive relational detour is oddly fun - if also delightfully squirm-inducing. That said, the film does hit a bit of turbulence in its final stretch. Some of the late-stage plot turns grow a touch clunky, and the resolution arrives more abruptly than it should, leaving certain threads on the table. It doesn’t derail the movie, but it does soften the landing some. Still, The Drama stands out as a unique, wholly entertaining piece of filmmaking - one that probes unexpected themes around the fragility of trust, the complexity of intimacy, and the murky terrain of moral ambiguity. It’s provocative in just the right ways. Just… maybe think twice before choosing it for date night. It might have you (or your partner) questioning a little more than you bargained for.
